I wonder if Jagger and Richards were thinking about real estate when they wrote this song… I doubt it. But it’s very applicable.

It’s nigh on impossible to get what you want when looking for a house.

At 79a Rowena Parade, Richmond (which has been converted to a private auction tonight) we have met buyers with $10m+ budgets and even they are having to compromise on a fourth bedroom, more land or a nicer street frontage.

Everyone wants the same thing… A freestanding period home in a nice street, north facing and bright, with off street parking, walking distance to a train and preferably brick. And great neighbours who are seen but not heard and happy to take your bins out and not object to your obnoxious roof deck.

Well good luck!

Not everyone can marry George Clooney or Meghan Markle (although would you really want to?) But just as there’s plenty of fish in the sea, there are plenty of houses on the market.

No one jumps on REA wanting to find a south facing, semi-detached house with no parking on Nepean Highway. Yet these houses still sell.

They say that happiness/fulfilment/contentment (or even just a lack of suffering) is the difference between expectations and reality. So if you’re looking for a AAA+ house with a B- budget you better get ready for some disappointment.

But if you’re willing to settle for a C+ house with your B- budget you’ll be over the moon and may even have some money left over to improve it to a B+.

Compromise is essential when buying real estate.

The human psyche is a wonderful thing. Once you’ve bought you are highly unlikely to have major regrets… (And parking isn’t too bad along the Nepean Highway outside of clearway hours).

So, like Meghan, stop being a princess and put your hand up at your next auction.
